President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov has yesterday received Director of Russia’s Bakulev Research Center for Cardiovascular Surgery, academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences Leo Bokeria at his Oqsaroy residence.

President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov has yesterday received Director of Russia's Bakulev Research Center for Cardiovascular Surgery, academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences Leo Bokeria at his Oqsaroy residence. Bokeria arrived in Tashkent to attend an international symposium on the topic "National model of maternal and child health protection in Uzbekistan: Healthy mother - healthy child", Uzbekistan's National News Agency (UzA) reported.

During the meeting President Karimov stressed that Leo Bokeria is one of those who always enjoy great respect in Uzbekistan, especially among those who got to know the delight of life anew owing to the outstanding surgeon's enduring talent and experience.

Leo Bokeria is known not only as an outstanding representative of modern medicine, but also as a figure who makes a huge contribution to the development of cooperation between medical institutions of Uzbekistan and Russia. Since 1994, a hundred specialists from Uzbekistan have been trained at the research center headed by him.

At the meeting Bokeria expressed his gratitude to President Karimov for warm welcome and stressed Uzbekistan's great successes during independence years in reforming the healthcare system, in diagnostics and treatment of cardiovascular diseases in particular.

The sides exchanged views on issues related to the boosting practical cooperation between the Uzbek and Russian cardiac surgery specialists.
