PM spokeman of Turkey: UN list of terror supporters not backed by a court

Iran Materials 17 July 2006 13:23 (UTC +04:00)

(Hurriyet) - Akif Beki, the official prime ministerial spokeman in Ankara, has clarified that a list published by the United Nations indicating names "suspected of giving financial support to terror groups" was not based on any court decisions.

Beki's comments were in relation to controversy over Saudi businessman Yasin El Kadi, who despite having been listed by the UN as a terror supporter, has continued to receive verbal support from top AKP officials in Ankara. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan made news last week when he noted that he knew El Kadi from his days as Mayor of Istanbul, and that as far as he was concerned, he "trusted El Kadi."
