(IRNA) - China on Thursday reiterated its stance that the Iran nuclear issue should be settled through peaceful diplomatic means or negotiation.

Addressing reporters at his weekly press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao stressed that Beijing had long called for the issue to be resolved through negotiation.

He added that his country was not interested in pursuing a path that would create more tensions in the Mideast region, reports Trend.

His comments followed repeated pledges by Iran that its nuclear program was only for peaceful civilian purposes.

The Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that it had found no diversion in Tehran's civilian nuclear program.

Iran said it was ready to give necessary assurances that its nuclear program is intended solely for generating electricity.

Tehran likewise reaffirmed its commitments under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the IAEA safeguards regime.
