Iranian president Hassan Rouhani has expressed full support of the Islamic Republic for the Syrian government. Iran will stay on the side of the Syrian people and government until the end, Rouhani said.

The Iranian president made the remarks during a meeting with Syrian speaker, Mohammad Jihad al-Laham in Tehran on June 2.

Rouhani also expressed hope that the Syrian army would be the winner of the fight with "terrorists," the official website of the president said.

He further stated that terrorists could not overcome the Syrian people.

"Thankfully today after four years of resistance, hope of the Syria's enemies about capturing Damascus in a few months is gone and their plans have failed," Rouhani said.

"We are sure that the foreign countries will not be able to impose their conditions on the Syrian people," he added.

Iran is a close ally of the Syrian government and has always shown its support for the regime of Syrian President Bashar al Assad.

Syrian opposition claim that Iranian military forces are fighting against them, while Iran dismisses the claims, saying that Iran only has advisors in Syria, to transfer its military experience to the Syrian army.

During the conflict in Syria, which began in March 2011, more than 150,000 people have been killed in the country and over 4.2 million have become refugees in Syrian territory and two million have fled to neighboring countries.
