Girl, directed by Lukas Dhont, has been chosen among seven films at the Tbilisi International Film Festival to be awarded by the EU Human Rights in Film Award 2018, Trend reports referring to Agenda.ge.

The award was presented on the occasion of Human Rights Day, which is celebrated annually on December 10.

“Respect for human rights is one of the fundamental values of the European Union. Let me congratulate the winner of this year's award, ‘Girl’, for its excellent portrayal of a current human rights issue and a truly personal story,” Carl Hartzell, Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia said.

Angelo Tijssens, the co-scriptwriter of Girl who received the award on behalf of the film crew said that cinema is a 'tool of empathy helping people understand others who are not like them'.

“We are lucky that we are in a position to be able to make a film about one single transgender girl. Many people who are and think differently around the world are being prosecuted or worse,” he added.

The Jury included representatives of the Public Defender's Office, Human Rights Watch, the Delegation of the European Union to Georgia and Georgian film critic.
