Kuwait's premier has asked Minister of Interior Sheikh Jaber al-Khaled al-Sabah to remain in his post after he handed in his resignation following the death of a Kuwaiti man in police custody, reports said Monday.

The Kuwait Times reported that Sheikh Jaber was told he would be given "full powers" to "clean the ministry" by taking legal action against those behind the death of Mohammad Ghazzai Hulayel al- Mutairi, DPA reported.

The newspaper also reported that there could be a cabinet reshuffle sometime next month which would affect the Ministry of Interior, among five others.

The Kuwait cabinet, a day earlier, rejected the interior minister's resignation and vowed that whoever was behind the death "must be severely punished for their deeds," according to the Kuwait News Agency KUNA.

There is currently a parliamentary investigation committee tasked with looking into allegations that al-Mutairi died in a police station due to excessive torture while he was being interrogated.
