A Tunisian court on Tuesday ordered the extradition of former Libyan prime minister Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi to Tripoli, where he is wanted on charges of corruption, a lawyer involved in the case told dpa.

The appeals court in Tunis said Libya had given written assurances that Mahmoudi would not be mistreated, the lawyer, who did not wish to be named, added.

Mahmoudi was arrested in Tunisia on September 21 after fleeing Libya following the overthrow of Moamer Gaddafi's regime.

He was sentenced to six months in prison for illegally entering the country.

On September 27, the appeals court overturned his conviction and freed him, but he was promptly rearrested after Libya issued an international warrant for his arrest.
