US Middle East peace envoy George Mitchell met separately with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Jordan's King Abdullah II on Monday, and urged "restraint" in the West Bank where four Palestinians were killed by Israeli troops in recent days.

"We urge all sides to exercise restraint," Mitchell said as he talked to reporters along with the chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat after the meeting with Abbas, dpa reported.

"What is needed now is a period of calm, quiet in which we can go forward in the effort in we are engaged," he said, reporting that Abbas had raised the issue of the recent killings near Nablus in the West Banks.

Mitchell, who earlier met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said the administration of US President Barack Obama wanted to continue efforts "to establish the conditions which will make possible the early commencement of proximity talks" between Palestinians and Israelis.

Erekat said that Abbas had asked Washington to "restrain the latest dangerous Israeli escalation in Nablus". He also condemned Netanyahu's latest comments that Israel would continue to build settlements in East Jerusalem.

Abbas is spending a week of convalescence in the Jordanian capital after being injured in a fall during a visit to Tunisia, Palestinian officials said.

The Jordanian court said in a statement Mitchell also briefed King Abdullah about his talks with Abbas and Netanyahu which were aimed at providing the conditions for a two-state solution for Israel and the Palestinians.
