A German national and two Afghan security guards were killed Friday when six suicide bombers stormed the compound of a US aid organization in northern Afghanistan, officials said, DPA reported.

"One police and one private security guard were killed in the ongoing fighting," provincial Governor Mohammad Omar told the German Press Agency dpa. He said at least four bombers were killed, while Afghan and US forces were fighting the remaining militants.

A source, who did not wanted to be named, said that a German private guard was also killed in the attack, which occurred early Friday in the centre of Kunduz, the capital of the province of the same name.

A bomber detonated his explosive-laden vehicle at the gate of the compound occupied by USAID, a US government-run aid organization, opening the way for his comrades, Omar said.

Humayun Khamoosh, the head of Kunduz provincial hospital said that 22 injured were brought to the hospital, including civilians and security forces.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said that six of their bombers attacked the organization, which works with US and NATO forces in the province.

Mujahid claimed that dozens of security forces, including foreign nationals were killed in the attack, which was still ongoing.
