US warns Syria may not abide by ceasefire commitment

The United States warned Wednesday that the Syrian government's promise to adhere to a planned ceasefire had "little credibility" after recent failures to implement a peace plan, DPA reported.

US Ambassador Susan Rice, speaking to reporters in New York, said Syria's "commitment (to the ceasefire) has little credibility given its track record. The burden remains squarely on the Syrian regime, not the opposition, to meet its obligations in full and visibly under (UN-Arab League envoy Kofi) Annan's plan."

Damascus informed Annan Wednesday it would adhere to the ceasefire, which is to begin at 6 am local time (0300 GMT) Thursday.
