Armenian armed forces have broken the ceasefire with Azerbaijan 71 times in various parts of the contact line between Azerbaijani and Armenian armies in the last 24 hours, Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said Oct.3.

Armenian military used heavy machine guns and mortars to shell Azerbaijani troops' positions.

Armenian armed forces located near the villages of Tapgaragoyunlu of Goranboy district, Goyarkh of Terter, Sarijali, Yusifjanli, Javahirli, Nemirli, Merzili of Agdam district, Kuropatkino of Khojavend, Horadiz, Gorgan, Garakhanbayli, Ashagi Seyidahmadli, Ashagi Veyselli of Fizuli and Mehdili of Jabrayil districts, opened fire at the positions of Azerbaijani armed forces.

Meanwhile, Azerbaijani positions underwent fire from the positions located on the nameless heights of Goranboy, Khojavend and Fizuli districts.

Azerbaijani armed forces carried out 80 strikes on enemy positions.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
