Azerbaijan, Baku, Sept. 28 /Trend/

During his visit to the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island on Sept. 27, Azerbaijani ambassador to Canada Farid Shafiyev met with Speaker of the Parliament of this province Kathleen Casey, the Azerbaijani Embassy in Canada reported Tuesday.

The meeting was held in the provincial capital - in Charlottetown. The sides noted the importance of cooperation between the regions of Azerbaijan and Canada.

The foundation of government of Canada as a federation was laid in this city in 1864. The Parliament discussed the foundations of democracy in Canada. According to the ambassador, from this point of view, the meeting was symbolic because Azerbaijan was the first country establishing parliament in the Muslim world and in 1918 women gained the right to vote.

Shafiyev, who arrived in Charlottetown to attend the annual diplomatic forum, organized by the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade for the heads of diplomatic missions, gave an interview to local newspaper "Guardian". In the interview, information was provided about Azerbaijan, as well as bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Canada.
