The crude oil production in the US has dropped by 91,000 barrels per day in December 2016 to 8.783 million barrels per day, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) said in its report.

This is while the oil production in the country is down by 4.8 percent as compared to December 2015.

The production in North Dakota fell by 17.6 percent and in Texas by 5.8 percent from a year earlier, according to the report.

However, the offshore oil production rose by 7.7 percent to 1.728 million barrels a day in the offshore Gulf of Mexico, said the EIA.

US crude oil production averaged an estimated 8.9 million barrels per day in 2016.

The February Short-Term Energy Outlook of the EIA also forecasts year-over-year production in the Federal Offshore Gulf of Mexico to increase by 30,000 barrels per day in 2017 and by an additional 140,000 barrels per day in 2018 to reach a total of 1.8 million barrels per day.

Total US crude oil production from the Lower 48 states, the Offshore Gulf of Mexico, and Alaska is expected to average 9 million barrels per day in 2017 and 9.5 million barrels per day in 2018.
