Turkmenistan, Indonesia intensify economic ties

Chairperson of the Majlis (parliament) Akja Nurberdieva has received the credentials of Indonesian Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador Dian Wirengjurit, the Turkmen government said today.

"While expressing mutual interest in developing the long-term successful partnership, backed by a huge resource and economic potential, Nurberdieva and Wirengjurit stressed the need to strengthen bilateral ties in the areas important for the economy of both countries. Turkmenistan and Indonesia pay special attention to the development of the spheres," the message said.

The sides exchanged the views on cooperation prospects.

Wirengjurit said that he will do everything possible to strengthen and expand the fruitful dialogue between the two friendly countries.

Indonesia has been showing the interest in the Turkmen market for a long time. Indonesia Petroleum Ltd (INPEX) acquired the shares in the gas pipeline consortium in the pipeline construction from Turkmenistan to Pakistan in the mid. 1990s. But the project was suspended because of the instability in the transit territory - Afghanistan.

Ashgabat and concerned countries have recently revived the project. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has financed a feasibility study. India acts as a buyer of Turkmen gas. This added the chances for the transnational project implementation. At this stage, Bangladesh considering the issue of its participation.
