Iran currently owns the world's second largest tanker fleet, the managing director of National Iranian Tanker Company, Ali-Akbar Safayi said on February 2, Iran's IRNA News Agency reported.

"Iran's tanker fleet capacity currently stands at 16 million deadweight tonnage (DWT)," Safayi said.

He went on to note that the figure was 14 million DWT 18 months ago.

Iran's tanker fleet consists of 67 oil tankers.

Reuters reported in August that Iran has taken delivery of several new oil tankers as it relies more on its own fleet capacity to help sustain crude export shipments in the face of western sanctions.

Data from publisher IHS Maritime shows that four supertankers, each with a maximum carrying capacity of two million barrels, joined NITC's fleet between May and late July 2013.

Another three entered service with NITC earlier last year.
