Iran plans to increase its capacity for producing power by 18,000 megawatts (MW) by optimizing the current power plants.

Speaking at a groundbreaking ceremony for building a power plant (Sirik) in the country’s southern province of Hormozgan, Iranian Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian has said that his ministry has several projects for increasing the country’s power generation capacity by 16,000 MW, IRNA news agency reported.

The power generation capacity will reach 18,000 MW after the inauguration of the 1,400 MW Sirik power plant, he added.

Currently the average efficiency of the country’s power plants stands at 37.2 percent and Iran plans to increase this volume to above 50 percent by converting the gas power plants into combined-cycle power plants (CCPP). The share of CCPPs in Iran’s total power generation stands at 25 percent currently.

According to the report, Russia has financed the construction of Sirik power plant which is expected to be inaugurated within five years.

Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak also attended the groundbreaking ceremony.

According to the latest weekly report released by Energy Ministry, Iran’s nominal power generation capacity reached 76.111 GW as of Feb. 5, but the actual power generation is less than this volume.
