Iranian Speaker Ali Larijani is preparing to travel to New York on Aug. 31 to take part in a parliament leaders meeting at the United Nations.

The meeting will last two days, IRNA reported August 12.

Ahmad Reza Dastgheib vice-chairman of Iran's Majlis Foreign Policy and National Security Committee, Kazem Jalali, member of the Committee on the Human Rights of Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Javad Jahangirzadeh, member of IPU-UN Relations Committee and two other lawmakers will accompany the Iranian Speaker.

"The US has issued visas for several members of the Iranian team," IRNA quoted Moayyed Hosseini Sadr, a member of parliament as saying.

He said that the UN meeting would focus on global peace and security.

Preparations are in full swing for the World Conference of Speakers of Parliament at United Nations Headquarters in New York from Aug. 31- Sept. 2, IPU announced on its official website.

"The Conference, which will focus on placing democracy at the service of peace and sustainable development and building the world the people want, is part of a series of high-level meetings leading up to the UN Summit in September and the adoption of the new Sustainable Development Goals. As well as discussing the role of parliaments in implementing the SDGs, the Speakers will debate the challenges and opportunities faced by parliaments in holding governments to account, and continuing efforts to ensure that gender equality is placed at the heart of parliamentary work. More than 130 Speakers have so far confirmed they will be attending, along with hundreds of other participants".
