Kazakhstan develops national export strategy

Astana, Kazakhstan, Jan. 15

By Daniar Mukhtarov - Trend:

Kazakhstan has developed a National Export Strategy (NES), deputy chairman of board of the 'National Export and Investment Agency KAZNEX INVEST JSC' Meyrzhan Maykenov said at a press conference held in Astana on Jan. 15.

"The development of a national export strategy included three main concepts: goods that can be supplied to Kazakhstan for export, the routes for supply of the goods, as well as the high quality export basket," he said.

He said the new national strategy designates the products of such industry areas as metallurgy, chemical industry, and food industry as priority goods for export.

"Twelve major markets have been defined for Kazakhstan's exports. These are Russia, Belarus, which are included in the Common Economic Space, China, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, the Caucasus - Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, as well as Afghanistan, Iran and the EU market. We intend to open representative offices in these countries," Maykenov said.

Today, Kazakhstan is ranked 42nd in the list of leading exporters, and its export geography includes 119 countries. Kazakhstan is a leading exporter of uranium, ferroalloys, flour, wheat and oil. In 2012, exports of processed goods reached $21.4 billion, or 25 percent of the total export volumes.

"However, domestic exports are characterized by low commodity diversification. This is due to Kazakhstan's location in the center of the continent and the remoteness of its ports, the lack of developed infrastructure and financial support for our exporters," Meyrzhan Maykenov added.
