Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili commented on Russian President Vladimir Putin's statement about Russia's readiness to cancel the visa regime for Georgian citizens, Sputnik said.

President Putin said at the annual press conference Dec. 17 that the Russian government is ready to cancel the visa regime for Georgian citizens.

"We think this is a correct action," Garibashvili said.

"We would like more Russian tourists to visit Georgia," he said. "It is necessary to take into account the interests of our compatriots living in Russia, as well as Georgian businessmen and citizens in connection with the simplification of the visa regime."

Tbilisi broke off diplomatic ties with Russia after Moscow announced that it recognized the independence of Georgia's separatist regions - Abkhazia and South Ossetia (Tskhinvali region) in August 2008.
