The United States on Friday called for a speedy transition of power to a civilian government in Egypt, as protests against the ruling military council continue, DPA reported.

"We believe that the full transfer of power to a civilian government must take place in a just and inclusive manner that responds to the legitimate aspirations of the Egyptian people, as soon as possible," the White House press office said in a statement.

It added: "The United States strongly believes that the new Egyptian government must be empowered with real authority immediately."

At least 41 people were killed in clashes that erupted on Saturday between police and protesters demanding that the military council that has ruled Egypt since the fall of president Hosny Mubarak in February hand over power to a civilian administration.

Egypt will hold a parliamentary election on Monday. A vote to elect a new president is scheduled for June 2012.
