Over the past 24 hours, Armenia's armed forces 38 times violated the ceasefire on various parts of the contact line of Azerbaijani and Armenian troops, the Defense Ministry of Azerbaijan said Dec. 24.

Armenian military located in the village of Aygepar of the Berd district of Armenia, opened fire at the Azerbaijani armed forces located in the village of Alibeyli of Tovuz district.

Azerbaijani armed forces were also fired at from the positions near the Tapgaragoyunlu village of Goranboy district, Goyarkh of Terter district, Yusifjanli, Marzili, Sarijali and Javakhirli villages of Aghdam district, Kuropatkino village of Khojavand district, Horadiz village of Garakhanbeyli district, Ashagi Seyidahmadli villages of Fizuli district.

Aside from that, the Azerbaijani military's positions were fired at from the positions on nameless heights of Goranboy, Khojavand and Fuzuli districts.

The opposing side was silenced with return fire.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
