Common Objectives Required for Joint Actions: Azerbaijani Oppositional Leader

Azerbaijan, Baku, 30 June / corr. Trend E.Babayev / The chairman of the Azerbaijani oppositional party rules out the possibility of joint actions in the current situation. "There should be common objectives to hold joint action of opposition," Ali Karimli, chairman of the oppositional Azerbaijani Popular Front Party (APFP) and co-founder of the Azadlig bloc, told Trend on 30 June.

The Azerbaijani oppositional Musavat party called on oppositional parties to hold joint actions. Musavat party considers that it is important to hold joint actions of opposition in the run-up to elections in the country.

The presidential elections will be held in Azerbaijan on 15 October. The Musavat Party nominated Isa Gambar, the Azerbaijani Democratic Party (ADP) - Sardar Jaliloglu and the Green Party - Mais Gulaliyev, the Azerbaijani Unified Popular Front Party - Gudrat Hasanguliyev, and Muasir Musavat - Hafiz Hajiyev. Eldar Namazov, the head of Social Forum of 'For Azerbaijan' will participate independently in the elections. The ruling New Azerbaijan Party, intends to nominate Ilham Aliyev, its chairman and the current Azerbaijani President. The Ana Veten and Social Prosperity Party decided to support Aliyev's candidature in the elections. Azadlig bloc, uniting three oppositional parties (the Popular Front, the Civil Development and the Liberal party), intends to boycott the elections.

According to Kerimli, joint actions of opposition will be possible, only when oppositionists hold a unified position. There are different positions concerning the elections in the current political conditions.

At present, the oppositional APFP is a member and co-founder of the Azadlig bloc, a largest opposition alliance. Late Abulfaz Elchibey, the Azerbaijani ex-President was a founder and chairman of the party till 2000. Ali Karimli, former Secretary of State and ex-MP, is the chairman of the party since 2000.
