Azerbaijani Vice Speaker: Urges Parliament to Consider Financing Political Parties

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr. Trend S.Ilhamgizi / Bahar Muradova, the Vice-Speaker of the Milli Majlis (Azerbaijani Parliament) and the Deputy Executive Secretary of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party, stated on 21 June that the principles of representation of Azerbaijani political parties in the Parliament should be considered regarding being financed by the State.

Muradova noted that the Law on Political Parties should consider not internal problems of parties, but their relations with society.

"It means that the law should not be changed completely. There is a necessity to take serious steps regarding the law in reference to its international practice. We are interested in discussions of the law by the Parliament. We are supporters of financing parties by the Government. As to me, the most optimal variant of financing political parties must be related to representation of political parties in the Parliament," the Vice-Speaker added.

Muradova noted that there is no necessity in Azerbaijan on restoration of a proportional election system. The majority system satisfies Azerbaijani society.
