Society Materials 18 January 2007 14:12 (UTC +04:00)

The sacred month of Muslims вЂ" Muharram вЂ" will begin on 20 January, and the 10th day of the Muharram Month вЂ" Ashura вЂ" will be on 30 January, Trend reports with reference to the statement of the Caucasus Muslim Department. Shiahs mark this day as the commemoration of Ali and Fatma's son and Prophet Muhammad's grandchild Imam Huseyn. He was killed on 10th of Muharram Month at Kerbala Mosque. Huseyn, with a small army, fought against Caliph Ziyad, who had held power illegally in Caliphate. The army was destroyed and Huseyn sported 10 stab wounds.

The tragedy in Kerbala made a strong impression on his contemporaries. Huseyn was named as a great martyr and Kerbala became a place of worship for Muslims. The day of his assassination is marked with proper mourning rituals.

Presenting its condolences to all Muslims, the Caucasus Muslim Department calls on citizens to hold the religious mourning in a silent manner, follow the rules in the sacred month, keep themselves from self-torture and voluntarily give donor blood.
