The Turkmen-Russian cooperation is an important factor of stability and security in the Central Asia and the Caspian Basin and has a great positive impact on regional and interregional processes, Turkmen President Gurbangulu Berdimuhammedov said at the meeting with his Russian Counterpart Dmitry Medvedev inTurkmenbashi.

"We highly value our relations with Russia, the atmosphere of trust that exists between the two countries," he said.

Berdimuhammedov said Russia is one of the largest economic partners of Turkmenistan today. The volume of trade turnover between the two countries amounted to $1.857 billion over 8 months of this year.

However, there have been taken real steps to diversify the commodity nomenclature of mutual export-import operations. Russia shows increasing interest in purchases of the Turkmen agricultural products, textile, light industry, chemical industry, building materials and other goods.

Another illustrative example of the positive dynamics of bilateral cooperation is direct contacts between Turkmenistan and the regions of the Russian Federation, including the Republic of Tatarstan, St. Petersburg, Astrakhan Oblast and others.

Russia is a longtime gas partner of Turkmenistan. "Turkmenistan is ready to increase its natural gas exports to the Russian Federation based on the existing bilateral agreements," Berdimuhammedov said.

The joint trading houses established in Ashgabat and Moscow are also aimed to enhancing trade and economic cooperation.

Berdimuhammedov noted the reasonability of establishing trade and transport infrastructure in the towns of Turkmenbashi and Astrakhan, which could include major wholesale trade enterprises with significant areas for storage and transshipment of goods to be transported by road, rail, air and maritime transport modes to Turkmenistan and Russia.
