The main network of the Baku segment for national information delivery AzDatacom has been completed, the Deputy Minister of Communications & Information Technology of Azerbaijan, Iltimas Mammadov, stated on 1 November, Trend reports.

According to him, in due course the equipment for the final segment will be received for the management center. The work on the Baku segment is expected to be fully completed by the end of the year. In 2007, work will commence for other cities and districts of Azerbaijan, he said.

The creation of AzDatacom has been carried out in two stages the first stage covers Baku and the second stage includes other districts and cities. At first the network will be connected in the districts which have optical-fibrous communication lines.

Earlier it was considered that the AzDatacom Baku line will have a transmission capacity up to 10 Gbps, and in regions, this indicator has reached only 1 Gbps, but in the future this figure will increase to 10. Education institutions and State organization will join the network. The cost for using this network will not be dependent upon the distance. The number of servers can be increased on the network based on the different price tariffs. It will be possible for the Internet providers and other services to develop their business in the regions.

The project is carried out within the technical assistance program National E-Governance Network Initiative realized jointly by the Azerbaijani Ministry of Communications & Information Technology and the United Nations Development Program and is one of the measures included in the State Program for Development of Communications & Information Technology in Azerbaijan (E-Azerbaijan) in 2004-2008.
