Netanyahu and Mitchell to continue talks on Monday

US special envoy George Mitchell and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are set to continue discussions Monday over launching indirect talks with Palestinians, the prime minister's office said in a statement.

After meeting for more than two hours in Jerusalem on Sunday, Netanyahu and Mitchell agreed to meet again on Monday before the US envoy sees Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah, dpa reported.

The Israeli prime minister and US envoy held "good discussions" concerning the advance in the peace process, the statement said.

The new round of diplomacy by the US envoy, is the latest effort by the US administration to bring Israelis and Palestinians back to the negotiating table after a hiatus of 15 months.

The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) green-lighted Sunday indirect talks between Israel and the Palestinians, paving the way for a possible resumption of the Middle East peace process.

Executive committee Secretary General Yasser Abed Rabbo told reporters that the committee had decided to give a chance to the US proposal for indirect talks, as a means of getting back to the negotiating table.

A formal announcement on the start of the indirect talks - proximity talks in the official parlance - could come as early as Monday, after US Vice President Joe Biden arrives in Israel.
