Baku, Azerbaijan, Aug.13

By Fatih Karimov - Trend: Iranians consume six times as much electricity as Indians, and three times as much electricity as Japanese.

Homayoun Haeri, the managing director of the Iran Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution Management Company (TAVANIR), said electricity consumption has surged in the country, particularly in the city of Tehran, Iran's Mehr news agency reported on Aug. 13.

Electricity consumption has increased 15 percent since the beginning of the current year compared to the same period in the past year, he added.

The Iranian fiscal year starts on March 21.

In Tehran, electricity consumption has increased 30 percent year on year.

Peak of electricity consumption hit 46,991 megawatts in Iran on Aug. 6, showing a 4,428 MW increase compared to the same day of the previous year.

Industrial units consumed 3,205 MW of electricity on the mentioned day, Iran's IRNA news agency reported on Aug. 8.

Iran Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution Management Company (TAVANIR) official Alireza Ahmad Yazdi said on July 23 that the peak of consumption is forecasted to reach 50,000 megawatts in the current year.

Industrial units account for about 34 percent of total electricity consumption in the country, he noted.

The current Iranian year began on March 21.

Electricity consumption rate in Iran sharply increases every summer.

Iran's Fars News Agency reported on July 15 that the figure is now near the country's total generation capacity.

If the oil ministry fails to provide enough gas to the power plants, then numerous blackouts would be expected across the country.

According to the oil ministry, Iran's power plants on average consume 77 million liters of liquid fuel in the previous year.

Iran has 75 power plants with the liquid gas reserves enough for 45 days. The power plants have the capacity to receive over 200 million cubic meters of gas per day, but due to gas shortage the country, it meets around 40 percent of the power plants' needs with liquid fuel.
