An EgyptAir flight to New York from Cairo was Saturday diverted to Glasgow Prestwick Airport after a bomb threat, said the state-owned carrier's chairman, dpa reported.

"The plane was flying over Europe when a passenger found in its toilet a piece of paper carrying a threat to blow it up," added Tawfiq Assai.

"The passenger alerted the flight crew who in turn requested an emergency landing at the nearest airport."

The official added that the plane, which had around 300 passengers on board, made a safe landing at the Glasgow Prestwick Airport.

"Explosives experts are currently checking the plane, the passengers and their luggage."

The Boeing 777 landed at 2.25 pm (1325 GMT), the Glasgow Prestwick Airport spokesman told dpa.

He said the plane was "safely on the tarmac" and that Scottish police were "involved and on the scene.
