BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 14. The "Surakhani" tanker-museum, operated by Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company CJSC (ASCO), has been accepted as a member of the International Congress of Maritime Museums (ICMM), ASCO told Trend.
This membership makes the museum not only the first of its kind in Azerbaijan but also the first in the entire Caucasus region to be represented in this prestigious organization.
This membership enables the museum to participate in international projects, exchange experiences, and be represented in thematic exhibitions. Moreover, through this platform, Azerbaijan's ancient maritime history and heritage will be presented to a wider audience.
Originally serving as a tanker in the Caspian Sea for many years, "Surakhani" was transformed into a museum in 2021. It now stands as the world’s first and only tanker-museum, continuing to operate successfully.
The museum offers locals and tourists an opportunity to explore the history of maritime activity in Azerbaijan, the oil production in Absheron, and the heroic deeds of Azerbaijani sailors.
Founded in 1972, the International Congress of Maritime Museums (ICMM) has nearly 150 members from over 40 countries. The organization holds an international congress every two years to strengthen cooperation among member museums, promote the preservation and presentation of maritime heritage, and facilitate the exchange of expertise. The next ICMM Congress will take place from September 13-18, 2026, in Sydney, Australia, at the Australian National Maritime Museum.
