Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi said Saturday that his country had decided to cut diplomatic ties with Syria and close the Syrian embassy in Cairo, dpa reported.

Addressing a pro-Syria rally in Cairo, Morsi said that Egypt was also recalling its charge d'affaires from Damascus.

"Egypt, with its people, leadership and army, will not leave the Syrian people until they attain their rights and sovereignty on their united land," he added, calling for the establishment of a no-fly zone over Syria.

Morsi, who belongs to the Sunni Muslim Brotherhood, called upon the Lebanese Shiite Hezbollah movement to end its involvement in Syria's 26-month war.

"Hezbollah has to leave Syria immediately... We are standing against Hezbollah in its aggression on the Syrian people."

Morsi said he was discussing with Arab and Islamic leaders the possibility of holding an emergency summit on Syria's conflict, which has claimed the lives of at least 93,000 people, according to the United Nations.
