A series of deadly blasts rocked Iraq Monday killing at least 40 people and wounding dozens, dpa reported, according to the Iraqi National News Agency.

Late Monday, at least 21 people were killed when five blasts hit the northern cities of Mosul, Tikrit and Tuz Khurmato, the agency said.

A similar bomb blast also exploded in the town of Taji, north of Baghdad, killing at least nine people, it added.

The evening blasts came after ten people were killed and 30 were injured when three car bombs exploded earlier Monday in a village north of Baghdad, local media reported.

The blasts hit a vegetable market in Judaidat al-Shatt in central Diyali province, the al-Sumaria news channel reported online quoting police sources.

Iraq has seen a sharp increase in violence in recent months against a background of protests by the Sunni Arab minority against the Shiite-dominated government of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.

Over 1,000 Iraqis, the vast majority civilians, were killed in attacks in May, according to the United Nations.
