Parliament's members: Number of MPs must increase in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku, Jan. 22 / Trend A. Huseynbala /

It is impossible to realize the proposal to increase the number of MPs, members of Azerbaijan's Parliament said.

"Such a change can be made only in the Constitution through a referendum. Despite the fact that I was one of those who put forward a proposal to increase the number of MPs and restore the proportional electoral system before making changes in the Constitution in March 2008, these issues were not included in the draft of the referendum", chairman of Ana Vatan party, MP Fazal Agamaly told Trend on Friday.

According to Agamaly, this proposal seems to be subjective now. There is no necessity to discuss it.

"The increase in the number of MPs is impossible," chairman of the Committee on Agrarian Policy of Azerbaijan's Parliament Eldar Ibrahimov told Trend on Friday.

MP said he himself addressed with this proposal 5-6 years ago.

"The population of Georgia is 4 million. There are more than 200 MPs in Georgia. The population of Azerbaijan has exceeded nine million. Thus, 125 MPs are a small number for us. There is a need to increase their number. But it is unreal in the present situation," Ibrahimov said.

"Along with the restoration of a proportional system, we also support increasing the number of MPs up to 201 people," a member of Musavat group Arzu Samadbayli told Trend on Friday.

According to him, despite MPs representing other parties put forward various proposals, they have not been implemented.

"I still hope that the proposal will be accepted", MP said.

"Although the idea of increasing the number of MPs is urgent, it is not real because it will require amendments to the Constitution in the current situation," chairman of Great Establishment Party, MP Fazil Mustafa told Trend on Friday.

According to Mustafa, the referendum was held in 2009. No actions were made to increase the number of MPs.

"The proposals on electing one of MPs by majority system but the other - by a proportional one have not been approved. Now, it is unreal to hold a new referendum by wasting huge funds on it," MP said.

The Azerbaijani Parliament is represented by 125 MPs.
