Production of fish products in Kazakhstan increases

In the first five months of this year, the fishing industry of Kazakhstan produced 12,400 tons of fresh, chilled and frozen fish, which is 10.4 percent higher compared to the same period last year, the Energyprom analytical service stated.

In addition, the country produced 4,800 tons of cooked and canned fish, as well as caviar.

East Kazakhstan region (32.2 percent of the country's production volume) and Atyrau region (24.7 percent) are the leaders in terms of fresh fish volumes.

Energyprom notes that, despite the growth of production in the sector, the demand is satisfied by the Kazakh fishing industry only by half, and another 50.5 percent of demand in the first quarter of this year was satisfied by imports.

"The volume of imports increased by 2.2 percent for the year. The export of fish and fish products increased by 33.3 percent for the year," Energyprom data says.

With regard to the price of fish products in the country, fresh or chilled fish has risen in price by 11 percent, frozen fish - by 7.3 percent, and salted and smoked fish - by 5.8 percent.

Herring rose in price by three percent for the year, and canned fish - by 10.3 percent.
