The results of the presidential election in Turkmenistan confirmed the Turkmen people’s desire to preserve peace, stability and the policy aimed at progressive development of the country, Sergey Lebedev, head of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) observer mission, said in Ashgabat Feb. 13.

A presidential election was held on Feb. 12 in Turkmenistan.

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov was re-elected for a third term with 97.69 percent of votes, according to the Turkmen Central Election Commission (CEC).

It was not specified how the remaining votes were distributed among eight other candidates.

“The election campaign in Turkmenistan was successful and went smoothly,” Lebedev said, adding that the voters were highly active.

The election met the generally recognized international standards of the electoral law, according to him.
