US President Barack Obama was informed Friday morning of Egyptian leader Hosny Mubarak's intention to resign, dpa reported according to CNN.
Obama watched on television the formal announcement by Egyptian Vice President Omar Suleiman that Mubarak had stepped down after 30 years of rule and asked the army to take control of the country.
Obama was to make a statement about the situation in Egypt at 1830 GMT, the White House said.
