France advises nationals to leave Syria

Arab World Materials 4 May 2011 15:31 (UTC +04:00)

France has advised its nationals residing in Syria to leave the country, while conceding that foreign nationals are "not directly threatened."

The Foreign Ministry, in a travel advisory dated May 3 posted on its website, recommended that all French citizens "whose presence in the country was not indispensable or motivated by imperative reasons" should leave the country "until the situation normalizes."

The ministry also recommended that travellers planning to visit Syria postpone their trip, DPA reported.

Syria is in the throes of a brutal government crackdown against pro-democracy protesters, which opposition groups say has killed around 600 people since mid-March.
