( Calcutta News ) - Pakistan is celebrating its 60th anniversary with crowds taking to the streets to watch the fireworks.

The anniversary marks Pakistan's creation and its independence from Britain.

The violent partition of 1947 saw ten million people cross the border from India to Pakistan in one of history's largest mass migrations.

The departing British split the subcontinent, with India wedged between West and East Pakistan, which later was to become Bangladesh.

India will also mark its independence this week.

To mark the occasion both countries will allow concessions in what is sometimes a prickly relationship.

Pakistan will allow 134 Indian prisoners to return home; most of them fishermen who strayed across the border.

India is set to return more than 100 Pakistanis on Tuesday, to complete the prisoner exchange.
