U.S. supports the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia and continues its policy of non-recognition of the conflict regions in the area. It is stated in a joint statement following the meeting of the Georgian-US working group on defense and security established in the frame of the Charter on Strategic Partnership between Georgia and the United States.
U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Eric Rubin participated in the meeting on Thursday. Deputy Foreign Minister of Georgia Nikoloz Vashakidze headed the commission from the Georgian side.
"Georgian parliamentary elections held in October and subsequent democratic transfer of power are positive steps towards the integration of Georgia into Euro-Atlantic structures and demonstration of the country's progress. U.S. supports the Euro-Atlantic aspirations of Georgia and expressed gratitude for the contribution to the peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan," the statement said.
It stressed that the U.S. will continue to assist Georgia in improving the defense and strengthening of security and institutional development of defense capabilities and systems.
