Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych is on official visit in Ashgabat to participate in high level talks launched in the Turkmen capital on Wednesday, an official Turkmen source said.

'Another bilateral summit meeting confirms the interest of Turkmenistan and Ukraine to expand multifaceted interstate dialogue which has been successfully developed in all key areas in recent years, including firstly, economic, cultural and humanitarian areas', Turkmen Dovlet Khabarlary state information service said.

The Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper notes that the progressive dynamics of Turkmen-Ukrainian cooperation is largely determined by confidential and inter-state relations based on mutual respect.

The newspaper stated that the two countries established a solid legal basis reflecting the general focus on constructive political dialogue and effective cooperation of complementary national economies.

Diplomatic relations between Turkmenistan and Ukraine were established in 1992. To date 121 documents were signed between the countries at international, intergovernmental and interdepartmental levels.

An intergovernmental Turkmen-Ukrainian commission was created on economic cooperation and major joint projects are implemented, including construction of industrial and infrastructure facilities.

Local media stressed that the meeting can give impetus to the development of inter-state dialogue and in particular, through the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), chaired by Ukraine this year.

On the eve of the talks, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said at a government meeting that "the Turkmen-Ukrainian partnership has considerable positive experience of joint work and a solid versatile potential with the maximum realisation of meeting the interests of the two countries and their people."
