In 2009, Iran will face inflation and numerous economic problems. It is impossible to address these problems any time soon, former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami said.

Those who want to run for presidency must know that one should be in power so that to eliminate these problems," Mehr new agency quoted Khatami as saying in a meeting with the Arbadil population.

He said improving economic situation must stand on agenda. This is Iran's crucial problem. "A twenty-year program for Iran's development has been approved. Moral, material situation, in Iran, its position, political and geographic strategy are very favorable. We must take advantage of these opportunities rationally," Khatami said.

All religious and national minorities must have equal rights and enjoy equal respect, he said. "Our Constitution stipulates it. If any Shiite, Sunnite, Christian or follower of other faiths accepts Iranian Islamic Revolution and Constitution, we must protect them," Khatami said.

He said party and religious disagreements must be put aside. "One should focus on revolution values, Iran's development and resolution of all problems."

Problems do persist, but there are also ways to solve them, Khatami said. "I believe that the country can be managed in a better way. The population must be informed of upcoming difficulties. We can achieve success with the help of the nation," Khatami said.

"Each of the candidates, who wish to run for presidency, must be self-sacrificing. I have nothing to sacrifice except my dignity and experience. I sacrifice all of it for the Iranian nation," Khatami said.
