Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 18 / Trend , K.Zarbaliyeva/

The Sumgayit Police Department and State Committee for Religious Organizations found illegal literature.

Employees of both entities found 19 banned religious books in the house of a Haji Zeynalabdin Tagiyev settlement resident Jeyhun Abbasov, the Azerbaijani Interior Ministry told Trend on Feb. 18.

The Sumgayit Police Department launched an investigation into the case.

In 2008, the importation and distribution of 59 books promoting religious intolerance was prevented in Azerbaijan.

Statistics shows that the importation and distribution of harmful religious literature has declined, the committee said.

A total of 102 religious communities were registered in Azerbaijan in 2008. The number of religious institutions reached 533 in the country.

Of the religious communities registered in 2008, 101 are Islamic and one non-Islamic - the Sumgayit-based Jewish religious community Kubar.
