The Aluminum plant has been operating in Sumgait since the Soviet period, which restored its functioning in 2003. In 2003, the plant was put into commission by the Holland Fondel Metal. This company stated about plans to construct a new Aluminum plant in Ganja with a capacity variation from 50,000 to 150,000 tons per year.

In 2001, as a result of the investment contest Fondel received three entities of Azeraluminum JSC, Aluminum Plant in Sumgait, and Ganja Aluminous Combine- with capacity of 450,000 tons per year and Zeyil Alunite Field. In 2006, State Committee on Work with State Property Management cancelled the agreement with the Holland Fondel Metall on managing Azeraluminium JSC due to non-implementation of the investment program.
