Azerbaijan to realize joint project with WB to improve social protection

A joint project of the Azerbaijani government and World Bank titled, "Development of Social Protection in Azerbaijan," will launch in March, Labor and Social Welfare Ministry International Cooperation Department Director Elnur Sultanov said on Feb. 23.

"Administrative matters are being reviewed and nearing completion," he said.

The WB and Azerbaijani government signed a loan agreement on the project worth $54.6 million in November 2008. The WB will allot $26.7 million to the project under the terms of the International Development Association.

The project envisages modernizing the labor market by improving labor legislation and protection and employment services.

As part of the project, vocational education will be developed and upgraded.

The WB has financed one project in the Azerbaijani social sector.

The Pension Reforms and Social Security project has been implemented in the country since 2005. The WB allotted $10 million for the project.
