Initial Draft of Azerbaijani People’s Computer Project to be Discussed in April

Azerbaijan, Baku, 17 March / corr. Trend The implementation of People's Computer project was discussed during the meeting of working group, Rufat Gulmammadov, the head of the Department for Development of Information Society of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technologies of Azerbaijan said.

"It was an important meeting for the implementation of the project," he said.

Gulmammadov said that an initial draft of the project will be developed on the basis on the proposals made by the working group. The initial draft is expected to be discussed in April, during the next meeting of the working group.

The project of National Computer Project envisages supplying low income families with the computers under a long-term credit with lower interest rates. The working group has already been established and head of the project from Microsoft has been appointed.

The previous meeting of the working group said that Microsoft and Intel must develop their proposals concerning privileges and Azerbaijan, on its part, concerning the situation in market economy and the measures the government intends to take in the future.

Some 10,000 computers are expected to be purchased for distribution amongst the low income families in 2008.

The project covers three-year term. The cost of the project has not been determined yet.

The project will be submitted for the government's consideration after its final draft is worked out.

According to the rough estimations of the Ministry, every 100 people in Azerbaijan account for 3 to 4 computers. The figure can rise by five times once the project is successfully implemented.
