BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 19. Azerbaijan Railways CJSC (closed joint-stock company) has invested 923.3 million manat ($542.6 million) in 2003-2023 to upgrade its rolling stock, Trend reports.

In particular, 644.4 million manat ($378.7 million) was allocated for the purchase of 93 locomotives.

During 20 years, 278.9 million manat ($163.8 million) were spent on the purchase of 3,829 railcars.

Azerbaijan has the largest fleet of rolling stock in the South Caucasus region.

Earlier, Advisor to the Head of Azerbaijan Railways Emil Mammadov told Trend that the CJSC's development strategy envisages an increase in the railcar fleet.

"The amount of rolling stock at the disposal of Azerbaijan Railways enables the company to fulfill its obligations on cargo transportation within the country and within the framework of international commitments. However, considering the planned growth of freight transportation, the fleet will be replenished," Mammadov noted.
