(dpa) - Indonesian police confiscated Wednesday up to 600 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine allegedly smuggled into the country from China, police officials said.

Jakarta city police chief Inspector General Adang Firman said the drugs, locally known as "shabu-shabu," were seized during a raid in North Jakarta sub-district of Penjaringan, the state-run Antara news agency reported.

According to the city police spokesman I Ketut Yoga Ana, a Chinese national identified as Chang Cung Wei, 30, and his Indonesian driver were being questioned by police.

"We believe that an international drugs syndicate has been involved in this case," Ana was quoted as saying.

Indonesia in late 1990s enacted a tough anti-drugs law that includes a maximum penalty of death.

In late 2004, two Thais and an Indian convicted to death for drug trafficking a decade earlier were executed before firing squads.
