Currently, an important turning point is observed in the relations between Azerbaijan and the European Union in the energy sector, the head of the EU Delegation in Baku Roland Kobia said on Tuesday.

According to him, the European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso recently made a visit to Baku, during which the main subject of the negotiations was the energy issue. Practical meetings are organized based on the political decisions made during the visit. In particular, one of these meetings is the meeting under the Memorandum on cooperation between Azerbaijan and the EU in the energy sector signed between the sides in 2006.

This memorandum envisages bringing the energy legislation of Azerbaijan into conformity with the world standards, which is necessary for further convergence of positions in this field between the two sides, said Kobia.

According to him, the second issue is the energy security. Azerbaijan wants to sell its energy resources to Europe and the EU intends to acquire them. Therefore, great attention in this question is paid to the Southern Gas Corridor.

Another stage is to provide assistance to Azerbaijan in energy efficiency, which involves Azerbaijan's rational use of alternative energy sources, since the country has great potential to use solar and wind energy.

Earlier, in January Azerbaijan and the European Union signed in Baku a Joint Declaration on the Southern Gas Corridor. "

The South Corridor is a priority EU energy project diversifying energy supply routes and sources and increasing EU energy security. The South Corridor includes the Nabucco gas pipeline, Trans Adriatic Pipeline, White Stream, and ITGI.
