Investments in Azerbaijani ICT sector grow

Investments in the ICT and postal services sector in Azerbaijan have reached 84.9 million manat in January-March 2012, which is 2.6 percent more compared to the same period last year and account for 4 percent of the total investment in the country's economy, Azerbaijani Communications and IT Ministry said in its report for the first quarter of 2012 on Friday.

According to the ministry, the volume of investments by enterprises and the ministry's structural units amounted to 41.7 million manat during the reporting period.

In the first quarter, four new automatic telephone exchanges were commissioned throughout the country, two were reconstructed and six expanded. Work to install 17 units of TV and radio transmitters was carried out and two new post offices opened.

Number capacity of the network of automatic telephone exchanges during the first quarter increased by 3,000 units. At present, number capacity of the network of automatic telephone exchanges throughout the country exceeds 1.73 million units.

According to the ministry's statistics, at present, the total number of telephones accounting for every 100 people is 18.6 units on average through the country. This rate on the capital is 36.4 units, other regions of the country - 10.99 units, in rural areas - 7.1 units.

The volume of income obtained by the structural units of the Ministry for the first quarter totaled 81.9 million manat, or 18 percent more compared to the same period last year.

The official exchange rate is 0.786 manat to $1 on May 4.
