BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 23. COP Presidencies Troika [UAE, Azerbaijan, and Brazil] cooperation is vital to ensure the longing character of the negotiation process conducted within the framework of COP29, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov said during a meeting with his Brazilian counterpart Mauro Vieira on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan today, Trend reports via the Foreign Ministry of Azerbaijan.
The meeting discussed the areas of bilateral and multilateral cooperation between Azerbaijan and Brazil, as well as issues related to preparations for the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).
Besides, the meeting emphasized the importance of increasing mutual visits and contacts to further develop the existing political dialogue, as well as the benefits of the political consultations held between the two countries in terms of discussing cooperation opportunities.
The meeting also pointed out that the current trade turnover between Azerbaijan and Brazil does not correspond to the priorities for further deepening cooperation, and it is particularly important to utilize the available opportunities to develop economic and trade relations.
Azerbaijan expressed hope for significant progress in attracting financial resources to combat climate change, one of its main priorities during its COP29 presidency.
The ministers also held an exchange of views on other bilateral and regional issues of mutual interest.
This November, Azerbaijan will host COP29. This decision was made at the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Baku will become the center of the world and will receive about 70–80,000 foreign guests.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. COP—the Conference of the Parties—is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change. There are 198 countries that are parties to the Convention. Unless the parties agree otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Germany's Berlin with its secretariat in Bonn.
